The State of Distracted Driving in Louisiana

As shown in a 2019 study conducted by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, the statistics on distracted driving are a stark reminder of the danger it poses. Annually, hundreds of accidents are directly linked to drivers diverting their attention from the road. Recent years have seen fluctuating trends, with spikes in distracted driving incidents, particularly among younger drivers. The increase in mobile device usage despite ongoing legislative efforts underscores the persistent challenge of curbing this hazardous behavior.

Louisiana’s Rank Among Other States

When compared to other states, Louisiana’s distracted driving fatality rates are alarmingly high, often ranking within the top ten nationwide. In 2020–21, Louisiana had the 2nd highest number of deaths from distracted driving. Over 650 people were killed and over 23,000 were injured because of a distraction while driving, which includes those inside and outside a motor vehicle.
